Our model

Rural abuse needs a response that understands what is beyond the front door.

For people living on farms, yards, estates and in isolated communities, safety can be tied to transport, housing, money, animals, work, land and reputation. Support Beyond the Gate is The Bridle Path's specialist rural and equestrian response: the way we think, train and, in time, deliver.

What rural support has to consider

Safety planning has to fit the life somebody is actually living.

Transport and distance

Access to a car, keys, fuel, public transport and the distance to safe services can decide whether leaving or attending an appointment is realistic.

Home, work and land

Tied accommodation, family farms, shared businesses and rural employment can make home, income and identity difficult to separate from the abusive relationship.

Horses, pets and livestock

Fear for animals, responsibility for their care or threats against them can become part of coercive control and a barrier to leaving.

Economic control

Bank accounts, wages, vehicles, farm income, equipment, debt and access to business information all affect independence and safety.

Close-knit communities

When everybody appears to know everybody, privacy, disclosure and fear of not being believed can become major barriers.

Technology and monitoring

Location sharing, cameras, smart devices, vehicle trackers, account access and poor connectivity all shape safety planning.

Where we are now

Specialist rural understanding, with clear boundaries.

At this stage The Bridle Path provides information, awareness, specialist signposting, professional engagement, partnership conversations, training and research. We can help professionals think through the rural and animal-related barriers affecting a victim-survivor's options.

We are not advertising a 24-hour helpline, an emergency refuge, a clinical service or unrestricted direct casework. Where someone needs immediate or specialist support, we signpost to established services and emergency routes. I need support

What we are building

A specialist pathway from safety to recovery.

  • A specialist advocacy pathway: rural and equestrian safety planning, advocacy and casework, in development with governance, safeguarding, funding and commissioning built in from the start.
  • Reclaiming My Path: a structured recovery programme in development, from understanding abuse without blame to rebuilding identity.
  • Professional training: helping rural organisations recognise abuse earlier and respond safely. Training
  • The Bridle Path Village: a longer-term feasibility vision for recovery, rebuilding and independence. The vision

Abuse does not stop at the gate. Neither should support.
