Training that changes what people notice.
Professionals in rural and equestrian communities often see the signs before any specialist service does: the client who stops attending, the horse whose care suddenly changes, the person who is never allowed to come alone. Our training helps teams recognise the pattern, understand rural barriers, respond safely and use the right referral routes.
Do not make the survivor translate rural life for the system.
Look beyond the obvious
- Ask about transport, distance and privacy.
- Explore housing, land, business and financial ties.
- Include horses, pets and livestock in risk conversations.
- Consider firearms, machinery, chemicals and isolated buildings where relevant.
- Do not assume a close-knit community is automatically a protective factor.
- Ask whether technology, vehicles or animal trackers are being used to monitor movement.
Respond without judgement
- Do not reduce the situation to "just leave".
- Recognise that leaving may threaten housing, income, animals and identity all at once.
- Give options, not ultimatums.
- Plan contact around times and methods that are actually safe.
- Use established safeguarding and domestic abuse pathways.
- Record rural and animal-related risks rather than treating them as background detail.
Four ways to bring this to your team.
Behind the Farm Gate
Core awareness
Coercive control in rural routines, isolation, animals, land and housing, barriers to disclosure, safe responses and referral principles. For any team that meets rural, farming or equestrian people.
Safety Beyond the Silence
Role-specific briefings
Focused sessions for equestrian yards and organisations, veterinary and animal-care professionals, rural employers, housing, health and safeguarding teams, and multi-agency partners.
Rural Practice Development
Professional development
Deeper work on rural risk, adapted safety planning, animals and economic dependence, multi-agency working and referral pathway development.
Bespoke consultancy and briefings
Organisation-wide
Tailored work for organisations reviewing policy, safeguarding, referral processes, rural accessibility or service design.
Participants leave able to recognise coercive patterns inside rural routines, understand how land, animals and livelihoods become safety factors, and respond safely to a disclosure and connect people to specialist support.
Beyond the Standard Response
A police learning programme developed with The Katie Trust, bringing survivor experience, rural knowledge, investigative expertise and learning from bereaved families into one room: the warning signs that get missed, the information that becomes fragmented, and the need to hear people earlier. In development with policing partners; a version for the racing workforce is in discussion.
- Equestrian businesses, yards and riding organisations
- Veterinary practices, farriers and animal-care professionals
- Farming organisations, agricultural networks and rural employers
