The Bridle Path Initiative CIC is developing a specialist domestic abuse and sexual violence response for rural, farming and equestrian communities.
At this stage, we can provide information, awareness, signposting, professional engagement, partnership conversations, training development and research activity. We can also help professionals think through the rural and animal-related barriers that may be affecting a victim-survivor's options.
We are not currently advertising a 24-hour helpline, emergency refuge, clinical service or unrestricted direct casework service. Where someone needs immediate or specialist support, we signpost to established services and emergency routes.
What rural support needs to consider
Safety planning has to fit the life somebody is actually living.
Home, work & land
Tied accommodation, family farms, shared businesses and rural employment can make home, income and identity difficult to separate from the abusive relationship.
Horses, pets & livestock
Fear for animals, responsibility for their care or threats against them can become part of coercive control and can create a very real barrier to leaving.
Economic control
Bank accounts, wages, vehicles, farm income, equipment, debt and access to business information can all affect independence and safety.
Close-knit communities
When everybody appears to know everybody, privacy, disclosure and fear of not being believed can become major barriers.
Technology & monitoring
Location sharing, cameras, smart devices, vehicle trackers, account access and poor connectivity can all affect safety planning.
What we are building
A specialist pathway from safety to recovery.
Our long-term model is designed around what rural and equestrian survivors tell us is missing.
Support Beyond the Gate is the developing specialist advocacy and safety pathway. Reclaiming My Path is the developing structured recovery programme. Our professional training offer helps rural organisations recognise abuse earlier and respond safely, while The Bridle Path Village is a longer-term feasibility vision for recovery, rebuilding and independence.
These elements are being developed in stages, with governance, safeguarding, funding and commissioning requirements built in from the start.
